The sliver of land which lies between the Southern Alps and the Tasman sea gets more than its share of rainfall but it has attracted many visitors over the years. First they came for greenstone much valued by Maori, and then 160 years ago the goldminers arrived. Coal and timber resources have also been mined but today most people have come to see the sights and experience the remoteness of this place where the elements dominate and civilisation struggles to take root. Each of the audio tracks is for a different place.
