The region north of Auckland has more history, Maori and European, than most of New Zealand. The important Treaty of Waitangi was signed here in 1840. A generally warm, almost sub-tropical climate, sandy beaches and sheltered waters encourage recreational activities, including deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and sailing.
Part of the story of Northland is the story of the Kauri tree. Kauri is among the world's mightiest trees, growing to more than 50 metres tall, with trunk girths of up to 16 metres. These trees covered much of the top half of the North Island when the first people arrived. The forests were decimated by the settlers but magnificent examples remain and regrowth is being encouraged.
These audio guides covering 16 of the major attractions throughout the Northland province will help you plan your visit and provide insights when you are there. Each guide is independent of the others. The total length is 50 minutes.
Places, each covered by a separate audio guide on any Northland visitor’s must-see list include the
Matakohe Kauri Museum - providing a fascinating insight into Kauri gum digging,
Cape Reinga, where the spirits of the dead departed for the underworld
Kerikeri Basin, an early missionary settlement
Waitangi, known as the birthplace of the nation and where New Zealand founding Treaty was signed and New Zealand’s first Capital.
